The Gardening / Vegetable Manager will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of vegetable production and garden management. This role includes planning, planting, maintaining, and harvesting a wide variety of vegetables, as well as leading a team of volunteers or employees to ensure the successful operation of the garden.
Job Duties
Garden/Vegetable Manager typically has a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
· Garden Planning: Develop and implement planting schedules, crop rotation plans, and overall garden layout to optimize production and sustainability.
· Crop Management: Oversee the cultivation of vegetables, including seed selection, planting, watering, weeding, pruning, pest control, and harvesting.
· Team Leadership: Supervise and motivate a team of staff and volunteers; provide training on gardening techniques, organic practices, and safety protocols.
· Soil and Fertility Management: Monitor soil health, with a focus on organic amendments and sustainable practices to improve soil fertility and structure.
· Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of planting dates, crop yields, soil tests, pest management, and other relevant data to evaluate garden performance.
· Education and Outreach: Organize workshops or educational programs for community members, showcasing gardening techniques, nutrition, and the benefits of fresh produce.
· Budget Management: Assist in developing and managing the garden budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation and cost-effective practices.
· Collaboration: Work with local organizations, schools, and community groups to promote gardening initiatives and foster community engagement.
Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a related field (or equivalent of 7-10 years of experience).
· Proven experience in vegetable gardening, sustainable agriculture, or farming.
· Strong understanding of organic gardening practices and pest management.
· Excellent leadership and communication skills.
· Ability to work physically demanding tasks and in varying weather conditions.
· Basic knowledge of budgeting and record-keeping is preferred.
Pay Range: $75,000 – $85,000/Year, DOE
